Week 3: Tools and support
15 Nov – Nicotine replacement therapies
→ Safe, effective and reimbursed.
Adjust the dose according to dependence, not ‘willpower’.
16 Nov – Common misconception: ‘Patches don't work’
→ False. Failures are mainly due to under-dosage or misuse.
Inform = improve compliance.
17 Nov – Combining patches and oral forms
→ The winning combination for greater effectiveness.
One or more patches as a base, an oral form for sudden cravings.
18 Nov – Common misconception: ‘You can't smoke while using a patch’
→ False: You can smoke while using a patch; it is not dangerous. This shows that the nicotine dose is too low.
Do not stop using the patch; adjust the dosage!
19 Nov – Apps and helplines
→ Tabac Info Service, mobile app and 39 89.
Guidance means providing support beyond the service itself.
20 Nov – Common misconception: “You have to quit cold turkey.”
→ Not necessarily. Gradually reducing your intake can prepare you to quit completely.
The quitting process is always personalised.
21 Nov – Relapses are part of the process.
→ On average, it takes 5 to 6 attempts before you can quit for good.
Encourage, never blame.
